Three nights in Shibuya

Chasing reflections, rain and neon for a 60-second city film

We had one rule for this film: no tripods after dark. Everything handheld, everything at eye level, so the city would feel like something you walk through rather than look at.

The first night was scouting with the camera rolling anyway. The best shots came from the in-between moments — a crossing light turning green, a stranger's umbrella catching a sign.

The city keeps changing its lighting faster than you can change your settings. You stop fighting it and start following it.

By the third night we knew which corners to wait at, and which ones to leave alone.

Shot on

  • Sony FX3, S-Log3
  • 35mm and 50mm primes
  • No lights — practicals only

Field notes

What I learned from shooting strangers

Ask first, or ask right after — but always ask. Most people say yes when they can see you care about the picture more than the shot count.

  • Keep the camera low and slow.
  • Show them the frame on the monitor.
  • Send the clip. Every time.

A portrait is a conversation that happens to be recorded.

None of this is new. It just took me a few years of doing it wrong to believe it.
